Finally, today feels like Spring. I was outside for a little while today and it was actually warm in the sun and the birds were chirping happily - yippee, I hope it sticks around.

I tutored my ESL student today. She showed me how to make Roti and Chapati or Indian "bread". She pre-made the dough and brought in her rolling pin and bread board so she could demonstrate how to roll it out - it's very thin, and then she described how to cook it in a cast iron skillet over high heat, about 30 seconds on each side. She made extra dough for me so that I can try to make it at home. We'll see:)

I also did a little straightening up around the house. I found four bottles of open water with only a few sips drunk from each one - we waste more water doing this. For a while we were putting our initials on our bottles when we opened them but we seem to have gotten out of that habit - I'll have to re-instate that rule!

Winter Woes

Here we are on the 2nd day of March and I'm wishing for Winter to be gone and for Spring to burst forth with new life. We do have some crocuses coming up in the backyard but no blooms yet. So we wait...

In the meantime I had my third treatment yesterday. I felt pretty good most of the day until I ate dinner, which sent me over the edge with stomach pain. I had a double cheeseburger from Culver's, which was not a good choice but I tried it anyway - bad idea. So today I will be sticking with oatmeal for lunch and something bland for dinner. Other than that the treatment itself went fine. I did get a new prescription to help relieve some of the discomfort I've been having related to the digestive issues. Of course the pharmacy didn't have it in stock so I haven't tried it yet but I think they will get it in today so I wait for that too...

In the meantime today is a tutoring day so I get to do that later today and then I will probably do some digi-scrappin'. But until then how about a My Life and Scrap freebie?

Finally Friday

Well I seem to have made it through another "work week". This one seemed particularly long for some reason. The sun is shining today and a lot of the snow has melted. I was just outside looking in the garage for a small box to do some cabinet organizing and it's chilly but not cold. So I didn't find a box in the garage and ended up using an old can to store some jars and bottles in - I guess that will have to do for now - until the next time I go to get something out of the cabinet and everything falls on my head.

So not a lot happening at home this weekend. Katie went to Houston to visit a friend and Emily has plans to go out with her friends tonight to the school play and dinner. I don't know if there's something Drew wants to do tonight or not. By the time Friday rolls around he's pretty tired so we usually eat pizza and watch TV - woo hoo!

2nd Treatment

Well I had my second chemo treatment yesterday. Since I had been losing so much fluid from the intestinal issue I was becoming dehydrated, which has been an ongoing battle with me since I was diagnosed with cancer, so I also received two bags of fluid, which really helped me feel better so all in all the treatment went fine. I felt really good yesterday but My stomach started hurting again this afternoon so I'll keep this short but I did want to give a little update. I felt well enough to go tutor today, which is always good and something I enjoy doing:). No freebies today because MLAS is undergoing some updates so the freebies are down for a while.

Well off to lay on the heating pad - hopefully I'll feel up to more tomorrow - have a good one!

My first treatment ...

Well I started round three of chemotherapy today with my first treatment of Taxol. Yesterday, I felt really bad (gastro-intestinal, abdominal pain), as seen by my total lack of activity on the computer (that's always my family's first clue. In the evening I started my pre-meds - dex (dexamethasone - a steroid), and I took a tagamet, for acid reflux. By the time I went to bed I was feeling much more comfortable and was able to get a pretty good nights sleep. So I got up, got ready, took another heavy dose of dex and went in to the infusion center. I got there at about 9:00 am and many of the nurses I've worked with in the past greeted me and told me they were glad to see me - that's nice to see friendly faces. I had the infusion without any problems and I was finished with everything by noon and the hubby came and picked me up. We tossed around the idea of getting something to eat, which I really haven't done much of for about a week, but I was feeling so good that we decided to try Panera. I ate some soup and half of a turkey sandwich and it hasn't caused me any problems so far:) So I'd say my first treatment was a success - yippee!

Here Comes the Sun

Hey, the sun is shining brightly this morning. It's blinding off of the heavy snow we've had the past few days but it's more cheerful than the gloom.

I'm not feeling great this morning - I'm still having some abdominal cramping so I'm using a heating pad, which seems to help some. I went into the Cancer Center yesterday for a blood draw and urinalysis so I can start Chemo on Monday. I will go three Mondays a month for an infusion and then get the fourth Monday off. The drug I'll be taking is called Taxol, which is the same drug I took during my first round of Chemo (this is round three) so I know I can tolerate it and it worked at "knocking down" the cancer the first time so we are hoping for similar results this time. If not there are other drugs I can take. I chose not to do a clinical trial this round because the risks associated with those that I qualified for out weighed the benefits. There are always new clinical trials all the time so future ones aren't ruled out completely.

Health Update

Here's a brief update on my health issues. I've been having abdominal pain for a few weeks so I called +he doctor and she had me come in for a CT scan. I did that last Friday and went in to talk with her today. When comparing this most recent CT scan to previous ones it looks like the tumor has grown slightly. So we talked about the options for treatment. There are three clinical trials that I qualify for right now or we could always try traditional/standard chemotherapy. I've read through the information related to all those treatment options and now I'm trying to determine the risk/benefit ratio for each. Some of the possible side effects are pretty scary. I need to talk to the Hubby and I'll probably call my sister and see what she thinks, although that's hard to share all that info over the phone. So I'll let you know what I decide. At least the abdominal pain has subsided a little and I was able to eat some oatmeal and veggie soup today. You've gotta take it one day at a time.:)

Okay,it's been one of those days when I feel like ripping my hair out. Our Internet has been running SOOOO slowly so I called AT&T to get some help. We just upgraded to faster service about two weeks ago and it seemed to get a little better but now it's back to being as slow if not slower than it was before we upgraded. So everything I've tried to do today has taken twice as long as usual - that is so frustrating - and calling AT&T really wasn't very helpful, bah humbug!

It was one of those weekends. I was sick the entire weekend and didn't get much done but lay on the couch and run to the bathroom. I went to the doctor this morning because I was concerned I was having a "cancer flair up" and I am but not a progression, which means that I'm dealing with the effects that the original cancer, surgeries and chemo have on my body but the cancer is not progressing. So I still feel pretty wiped out - nothing to eat since Friday - woo hoo, great weight loss plan! So I pulled myself up off the couch and crawled over to the computer to rejoin life and try to get out of this funk that I'm in. Oh, and by the way, I hate winter. I've probably said that 20 times today. Anyway, what are you going to do? You just gotta keep treading water...

Happy Birthday to my hubby of 27 years. To celebrate we are going to return/exchange Christmas gifts that weren't quite right and hopefully buy a birthday present or two. It snowed here last night, about two inches, so everything is pretty much snow covered. It's very pretty but cold, so I'm not looking forward to getting out there in the icy conditions. The weather outside is ...

Oh I feel blah! The weather outside is cold and gray. Most of the snow that fell yesterday has melted so there are only little patches on the grass here and there. I have a bird feeder hanging right out side the window where I spend most of my time. The birds had been very active but I haven't seen many today. The stray cats that like to hang out under our deck have probably scared them away.

I spent some time searching for a new recipe for dinner because my hubby wanted to try something new. When I gave him several choices to pick from he decided he wanted chili instead. He was definitely influenced by the weather. So he went to the store to get the ingredients.

Oh he's the best! He just got back from the store and he brought me a surprise - Santa hats! I've been telling everyone for days that I really wanted my whole family to have Santa hats to wear on Christmas morning. Now we all have our Santa hat - oh I think we just started a new tradition!

Here we go again

Good news. Drew talked to the chemo nurse today (because I couldn't - I have no voice) and the doctor's discussed my case in the clinic yesterday. The results from my CA125 test came back lower than the last time it was checked and my CT scan showed that the tumors are no longer measurable so in essence they have determined that I am cancer free - yippee. I'm still a little skeptical about how long this will last but they said they will need to see me back in the clinic in March unless I start showing signs that the cancer has returned before then. Of course I'm hoping that it never comes back but I was hoping that the last time they told me I was cancer free. So for me it's kind of a waiting game until I reach that one year cancer free mark. I'll try to keep a positive attitude and focus on the things that I can control.

So the family cold that's been going around has hit me hard. I felt bad on Tuesday, good on Wednesday and really bad today. I had a slight fever, sore throat to the point it was difficult to swallow, congestion and overall achy. So my hubby says this is the worst day if it follows the same coarse as his did.

I did feel well enough to do a layout today. I've been working on extractions and never feel like they look very good but I'm pleased with the way this one came out. I used "Dream" by Designz by Jlo.

I love this picture of Katie. It was a beautiful spring day and we were throwing rocks in the river trying to make them skip - that's a highly esteemed skill in our family:)

New news

Buenas noches all - Just a little personal update. I went to the doctor's yesterday to talk about my new coarse of cancer treatment since I am no longer eligible for the one I had been using. We talked about the options: no treatment, traditional chemotherapy, or a new clinical trial. There are two clinical trials that I'm eligible for at this time so I'm reading over the info on both of those and will probably pick one of those. The only thing is is that they both have some potentially bad (fatal) side effects, so I need to weigh the options and determine if the benefits out weigh the risks.

On top of that I think I've finally caught the family cold that's been making it's rounds amongst us. I have a headache, sore throat, sinus congestion and achy feeling through out my body - yuck. As soon as I'm done blogging I think I'll go lay on the heating pad and take a nap.

Okay, if you were wondering...

Good day bloggites :) I thought I'd give y'all a bit of an update. My daughter that just returned from Europe did not have strep or H1N1 (thankfully) and is feeling better but has a cough and is tired. I haven't caught it yet but my husband has. He is trying to be tough and keeps saying he doesn't feel that bad but he sounds congested and also has a cough.

It turns out that this same daughter did break her foot while in Europe. Right now she is just wearing a special boot. She goes back to the orthopedic specialist next week and he will determine if the bone is working well enough for the bone to heal properly or if she needs surgery and/or a cast. Obviously we hope the boot is working. She has a lot of pain and is trying to control it with ibuprofen but sometimes it's not strong enough. The doctor gave her some pain meds but she really doesn't like to take them, especially when she is working.

What's Up - Freebie Hunters?

Just a little update on a few things in my life. I went in yesterday and had a CT scan and blood drawn for labs because I was scheduled for Chemo on Monday. The Chemo nurse called me and said my blood counts, (platelets, neutrophils/white blood cells and magnesium) are too low so we have to push Chemo back a week. That also means I won't get the results of the CT scan for another week either. The nurse's advice was to stay away from sick people. Okay, no problem - right? Well Katie came home from Europe yesterday and was running a fever, had a sore throat, a cough and generally felt crummy - Great:( So she was sent directly to her room (I didn't get to hear any stories yet) and Drew ran around the house with a container of Clorox wipes, wiping down every surface in the house. She's at the doctor's office right now getting checked out. In addition to her cold/flu like symptoms she fell while getting out of bed in a hostel in Florence and hurt her foot so she's also getting x-rays to determine if it's broken - too much excitement. So that's my little personal update.

On to other, more pleasant things. Let's talk digi-scrapping. If you've been reading my blog you know that My Life and Scrap has a new designer on their team. Rucola Designs is having her GRAND OPENING this week:

Howdy fellow keepers of the memories. I hope this blog post finds you all well and getting ready for the Thanksgiving holiday. Spending time with family is always an interesting experiment in inter-personal dynamics, but usually good :). As "keepers of the memories" we are obliged to take lots of pictures, download them and then scrap them. This can take up quite a bit of time, especially if your computer decides to run slowly. My Life and Scrap?

I LOVE the digi-scrapbooking site called: My Life and Scrap but some days I feel like leaving the "s" off - think about it! I'm in the process of scrapping some Christmas pictures of my oldest daughter when she was a baby (she's 22 now!). I just have one piece of advice (something I know all of you younguns' have heard a million times) - enjoy your kids (and your life) when you're young :) It goes by sooo fast. Don't take anything for granted and don't get upset about "the little things" (and some of those things you think are big things really aren't - take it from someone who has been through some big things in her life or the scrap minus the "s"). These pictures of my daughter are so cute but I look like I'm so stressed out about something - probably something like entertaining my in-laws :). So when I see these pictures and look at the joy on her face I'm hoping that she remembers only those "great" feelings and not those stressed out feelings that I may have been "putting out". These are all things you learn when you grow up and get a few more life experiences under your belt.

Anyway that is one reason I scrap - to remind my family, friends and myself of all of the good things in life:)! So on that note here is a fun, fantastic and fabulous challenge for you to participate in so that you may help someone you know remember something good that happened in their life:

Long time . . .

Yes it has been quite awhile since I've written on this section of my blog. Digi-scrapbooking does keep you busy but there are other things in life. Since last time, which was on our summer vacation, so much has happened. Katie started her new job and is really enjoying the perks of being employeed, if not the 8 to 5 grind. Emily started her senior year of high school but she doesn't seem thrilled about school - she has had several absences already so I'm not sure how she will make it to graduation. Drew is working diligently, as always, doing his research economic development thing. And I continue to go in for chemo every 28 days. The cancer seems top be "stable" according to the CT scans and treatment continues to be effective so we just keep plugging along.

Drew and I leave for a long weekend to Door County tomorrow. I am looking forward to just the two of us getting away and I think he is too :). I will take many pictures and post some here on the blog when we get back.

To be honest I'm going a little stir crazy being home all day with no real job - sure there is always housework to do but I hate housework and my stamina doesn't allow for any big cleaning jobs. I realized that this October will be two years since I've worked outside the home. I've got to find something to do - any suggestions. I am volunteering as a literacy tutor but that has been kind of sporadic. So really, any suggestions would be taken seriously - I'll be waiting :0
